School Options: Honing in on Homeschooling
Q&A with homeschooling mom of seventeen years, Sonya Martin
I have to say, I loved this conversation. It was a joy to speak with Sonya, and even more so to listen again, to the replay. If you’re navigating education options for your children, this is a must-listen.
Sonya tackles some of the big questions parents often ask when it comes to homeschooling, by posing a few of her own:
What does socialization mean to you?
What is education?
What do we truly want for our children?
We explore intergenerational connections, children’s passions, and desires, all while challenging assumptions about how education should look.
Consider this: How much time would it take you to teach your child what they’re learning in a typical six-hour school day? Would you need more or less time at home? You might be surprised to learn it could take as little as one hour. Homeschooling doesn’t mean bringing a school into your home! When I could get over this, everything changed.
Imagine what your life could look like with more time to simply be with those you love, instead of rushing through the 9-5 grind, cramming in dinner, and preparing for the next day—only to repeat the cycle. What if people had more time to truly live, rather than waiting for the weekend or ‘vacation’? Some, only to use much of that time to catch up on domestic duties.
Ever wondered, “Could I homeschool my kids?” Sonya dives into this question, and her insights might surprise you. She shares tips that have worked for her family and offers advice on making (most) days run smoothly - all while being honest with the fact that it takes work - but work that is well worth it.
This conversation ultimately brings us back to an essential question:
What if it’s not so much about time and spending…
as much as it is about how we’ve been spending our time?
I appreciated every minute of this inspiring discussion. Please take a listen, and feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or additional perspectives here or via email at EMPOWR@gmail.com.
